Ęthelred 16
(Male)
Minister, witness to West Saxon charters, fl. 839-868
m ix-l x
Notes: There may have been several Ęthelreds in mid ninth-century Wessex between whom it is now impossible to distinguish. Ęthelred 16 is here identified as having attested charters between 839 and 868, but note Ęthelred 10 who also witnesses a charter of 855 (S315). In is possible that one man concealed in these two entries became Ealdorman Ęthelred 9 (perhaps of Kent) c.858. In 878 Ęthelred 19, minister, appears in one charter; he may be the Ęlred 1 who attests a Winchester charter of 877.
