Description Wilfrid 2 was in exile for three years because of the disagreement between himself and King Ecgfrith 4 during which time he stayed for a while at Ely with ∆thelthryth 2 before travelling to Rome where, by the judgement of Pope Benedict 2 and many others, he was found to be worthy of a bishopric. He then returned to Britain and converted the South Saxons to Christianity.
