Theodred 3's memory has not been completely lost. The Londoners say that he lived in the time of King Æthelstan 18, that he went at his side to war against Olaf 3, and that, along with Oda 1 bishop of Wiltshire, he prayed for the gift from heaven [so that Æthelstan 18's sword will miraculously return to him during the battle]. His pre-eminent virtues won him the nickname of 'the Good'. He had one lapse (they say), more an error than a crime, in that he handed over to the rigour of execution on the gallows thieves caught at St Edmunds. |
