King William 1 notifies Bishop Æthelmær 35 of Elmham, Earl Ralph 3, Northman 9, and all his thegns in Suffolk that the abbey of Bury St Edmunds is to have soke over eight and a half hundreds as fully as Ælfric 113, the son of Wihtgar 9, and Ordgar 10 administered it on behalf of Queen Emma 2, King Edward 15’s mother, with everything belonging to them, that is fyrdwite, fihtwite, æbæretheof, grithbreach, foresteall and hamsocn. He forbids anyone, English, French or Danish except the abbey of St Edmund and Abbot Baldwin 5 to control the soke. |
