Description |
King William 1, at the suggestion of William 3 fitzOsbern, grants Hardmondsworth with its church and everything appertaining to the abbey of La Trinité-du-Mont of Rouen, in the presence of Abbot Rainier 1 and two monks named Nicholas 4 and William 26 . The grant was handed over with a knife, which the king in jest gave to the abbot as if making to drive it into the palm of his hand, saying ‘thus ought land to be given’. |
