Description	Vitalian 1 sent for Hadrian 2 and ordered him to accept the bishopric and go to Britain. Hadrian 2 answered that he was unworthy of such a rank and suggested a certain monk (Andrew 2) instead. The latter could not go because of his infirmities. Hadrian 2 then had to accept, but he also asked for a respite to see if he could find a man suitable to be consecrated bishop. He then proposed Theodore 1 to the pope.

Participant: Vitalian 1 (Pope, 657-672) : He agreed to consecrate Theodore 1 on condition that Hadrian 2 himself should take him to Britain.
Participant: Hadrian 2 (Abbot of St Peter's, Canterbury, c.635-710) : He had already travelled twice through Gaul on various missions and was better acquainted with the road. Moreover, he would take great care to prevent Theodore 1 from introducing any Greek customs which might be contrary to the true faith.
