Description Eata 2 sent Cuthbert 1 from Melrose to Lindisfarne, in order that there also he might both teach the rule of monastic perfection by his authority as prior and illustrate it by the example of his virtue.

*The nature of the community of Lindisfarne is explained in detail: it was both the seat of a bishop and the home of an abbot. All the brethren were monks. The bishop chose the abbot who had to rule the monastery, by the advice of the brethren.
