Recipient:
Ęthelweard 5
(Fifth-born surviving child of Alfred 8, d.920) : By Divine wisdom and the admirable foresight of the king (Alfred 8) Ęthelweard 5 was given over to the diligent care of teachers (Anonymi 124) with almost all the noble children of the district and also many commoners (Anonymi 123). In this school books of either tongue, Latin and also [Anglo-]Saxon, were attentively read; they were also occupied with writing so that, before they had developed strength suitable for human skills, such as hunting and other skills appropriate to nobles, they were seen to be eager and gifted in the liberal arts.
