Event: Assembly, Monastic life, converting to/joining/oblationAlfred 8.staffing of monastery at Athelney
||In the monasterium [at Athelney] Alfred 8 assembled monks of diverse ethnicity from everywhere.
*Asser 1 notes in chap. 93 that the desire for the monastic life had been lacking amongst that whole people [i.e., the West Saxons] although there were still many monasteria in that area, none, however, holding to the monastic rule in an orderly way. He expresses uncertainty as to why: whether because of frequent enemy attacks by land and sea or because of the excessive wealth of all kinds of that people.
Persons associated with this Event:
(the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons, 871-899) : [92:] In the monasterium Alfred 8 assembled monks of diverse ethnicity from everywhere (Anonymi 153) [93:] because he did not have any noble or free-born man, except children, of his own people. [94:] He made John 21 abbot and afterwards appointed certain priests and deacons from overseas (Anonymi 154): because Alfred 8 had not attained the number he wanted, he obtained quite a few who were Gallic (Anonymi 183). One young man of pagan origin (Anonymi 13) seen living in monastic habit by Asser 1 had been brought up there.
