Alfred 8
(the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons, 871-899) : Because the wind caused his candles sometimes to burn too fast, Alfred 8 ordered a lantern to be made very elegantly from wood and ox-horn. The door of the lantern was also of horn. Once the lantern was made, the six candles, one after the other, burned without a break through the twenty-four hours, neither too fast nor too slow. When they had burned up, others were lit.
