Persons associated with this Event:
Agent:
Alfred 8
(the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons, 871-899) : Alfred 8 reviewed carefully the judicial decisions of his kingdom that had been made in his absence as to whether they were just or unjust. If he could discern anything inequitable in those judgments, he would enquire himself of those judges (Anonymi 169) or through those whom he trusted (Anonymi 193) why they had judged so unfairly. If they confessed that they had not known better about these matters, Alfred 8 would command them to give up the offices that they had or to apply themselves more zealously to the pursuit of wisdom.

(Men trusted by Alfred 8 to enquire into judicial matters)
Recipient:
Anonymi 169
(Comites and praepositi who heard legal cases) : On hearing the words of Alfred 8, the comites and praepositi (Anonymi 169) were terrified and strove to turn themselves with all their might to learning just behaviour.
