Description
King William notifies Bishop Æthelmær of Elmham, Earl Ralph, Northmann, and all his thegns in Suffolk that the abbey of Bury St Edmunds is to have soke over eight and a half hundreds as fully as Ælfric, the son of Wihtgar, and Ordgar administered it on behalf of Queen Emma, king Edward’s mother, with everything belonging to them, that is fyrdwite, fihtwite, æbæretheof, grithbreach, foresteall and hamsocn. He forbids anyone, English, French or Fanish except the abbey of St Edmund and Abbot Baldwin to control the soke.
