[The monastery Eorcenwald 1 built for himself] is called Chertsey, and thanks to the help of one Frithuwald 4, a sub-king under Wulfhere 1, he filled it with monks and riches. Religion flourished brilliantly there until the coming of the Danes, who destroyed the place, burning the church, abbot, monks and all. But the incomparable prince King Edgar 11, not content with the building new monasteries everywhere, either personally or by the agency of bishops, was also concerned to repair old ones, and he put Chertsey back in firm footing. |
