Notes: Apparently the most important man beneath the king in late-8thC Mercia. @Simeon of Durham, 799, notes his death and says that he was also known as Hildegils though contemporary material fails to corroborate. See also 'Osberht 4', patricius, supposed recipient of a letter from Alcuin 1 but as the identification is made on the authority of William of Malmesbury alone Brorda, the only known Mercian Patricius of the period, is a much more plausible recipient. See Alan Thacker, ?Brorda (d. 799)?, ODNB.
