Discussion of the name

Leofhelm is a masculine OE name formed from the elements lēof (‘dear’) and helm (‘protection, helmet’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 312). Lēof was a productive element in late Anglo-Saxon names but helm appears only in a handful of names that were uncommon among landed families. The only Leofhelms yet recorded before 1066 were a monk commemorated in the earliest portion of the Durham Liber Vitae c. 800 (DLV: II, 136) and an unknown number of moneyers active over the period 899–972 (Leofhelm 2–7).
