Discussion of the name
Helghi is a masculine name from Scandinavia (ON Helgi), formed originally as a byname from the adjective heilagr (‘holy’). It was well represented throughout Scandinavia from the Viking period onwards and was adopted in Normandy, but in England is not on record before 1066 apart from its use in a handful of place-names (Insley 1994: 201; Fellows Jensen 1968: 138).Bibliography
