Discussion of the name

Haghni is the Old Danish form of a masculine name borrowed in Scandinavia from the West Germanic area (Hagano in Old High German). It was brought to England in the Viking period and appears as an element in major place-names in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. There are no recorded occurrences as a personal name before DB, but in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries it was well used in Norfolk (several dozen examples) and known but much less frequent elsewhere (Fellows Jensen 1968: 122; Insley 1994: 174–80). The later concentration in Norfolk, to the exclusion even of Suffolk, is strikingly foreshadowed by the evidence from DB, and helps to tip the balance in favour of identifying several landowners of the name in 1066. Besides appearing as a personal name in both 1066 and 1086, it was used TRE as a byname by Wulfric Haghni and to form the compound name Cockhaghni (Cockhaghni 2).
