Discussion of the name

The masculine name Cockhaghni appears to be formed from the Scandinavian name Haghni, prefixed by the OE word cocc (‘cock’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 306; Insley 1994: 174–80), a type of name best known for the sheriff Mærleswein (Mærleswein 1). It is unclear in both cases whether the first element originated as a nickname for men whose baptismal names were Haghni and Swein, or whether we are dealing with two utterly novel names. Both names certainly appear to be one-offs, and unsurprisingly there is no other person of the name Cockhaghni currently on record in PASE or elsewhere.
