Discussion of the name

Deoring is a masculine OE name, probably formed from the adjective dēor (‘brave, bold, fierce’) with the suffix –ing, though the first element may theoretically have been dēore (‘beloved’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 223; LVD: II, 173). The related byname Dyring was recorded twice in the tenth century, for Beorhtsige 15, a landowner in Kent (fl. 902–8), and Ælfsige 40, a thegnly witness of royal charters (fl. 955) (Tengvik 1938: 143), in both cases probably functioning as a patronym. The late OE personal name may have had a dual origin as both patronymic byname and newly coined independent name.

As a true personal name, Deoring appears first as the name of a thegn witnessing a Kentish charter of 880 (S 321; Deoring 1). In the mid eleventh century there were moneyers of this name at Lewes for the issue conventionally dated 1048–50 (Deoring 3; EMC 1002.1031), London 1059–62 (Deoring 4, EMC 1042.1514), and Stamford 1068–70 (EMC 1021.1171).

The name continued in use in the twelfth century (e.g. LVD: II, 173; Pleas, 1198–1212: I, no. 2422; IV, no. 3440) and later, giving rise to the modern surname Dearing and its variants Deering and Dering (Reaney 1997: 129).
