Discussion of the name
Botic is a masculine Old English name, known only as a solitary example in Domesday Book. It was based on the element bōt (‘help’) with the suffix –ic (von Feilitzen 1937: 207). Such formations are not well recorded, with only one other found among TRE landowners (Æfic), but may have been more common in lower social ranks. Names in Bot– are much better represented in the pre-Viking period than afterwards, and in 1066 Botic might well have been a low-status archaic name. That would be quite appropriate for the social standing of its only bearer.Bibliography
