Discussion of the name

Brunhyse is an OE masculine name formed from the elements brūn (‘brown’) and hyse (‘son, young man, warrior’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 209). Brūn was in widespread use as a name element in the mid eleventh century, though perhaps quite a recent fashion. Hyse was much rarer, otherwise found among TRE landowners only in the names of Godhyse 3 and the much more doubtful case of Leofhyse in ICC, where the name is probably a mistranscription of Leofgifu.

The name Brunhyse is otherwise recorded only once, as that of a moneyer at Colchester in the period 1044–56 (Brunhyse 2).
