Discussion of the name

Gundrada is a feminine name of Continental Germanic origin formed from elements which correspond to the Old High German words gund (‘war, battle’) and rat (‘advice, counsel, wisdom’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 277; Forssner 1916: 10, 21 note 4, 133, 134). There is only one person of the name documented in Anglo-Saxon England, a woman who held land in Sussex in 1066 (Gundrada 3).
