Discussion of the name
Cwengifu is an Old English feminine name comprising the elements cwēn ‘woman, wife, queen’ and gifu ‘gift’. Von Feilitzen (1937: 220) noted that one of the DB forms has ‘n’ for ‘u’ in the second element through scribal error, but he was misled in his discussion of some genitive forms by the use of ‘&’ to represent ‘æ’ rather than ‘et’ in Farley’s edition (Rumble 1986: 39,8-10 Note). The only entry in the PASE corpus is for Cwengifu 1, a catch-all for occurrences in DB; there are also three instances in the twelfth-century sections of the Durham Liber Vitæ (Insley et al. 2007: 101).
