Discussion of the name
It is not clear which of two masculine OE names the spellings Eliard and Eliert represent: Ælfgeard (from ælf ‘elf’ and geard ‘protector’) or Æthelgeard (from æthel ‘noble, famous’ and geard) (von Feilitzen 1937: 146). The DB name is therefore left unresolved. Both potential sources for the name are currently represented in PASE, and both are found in the regions of England where the DB name occurs. The names Ælfgeard and Æthelgeard were undoubtedly current in both the Welsh borders and Berkshire, though neither seems to have been common among the social groups represented in the corpus.
Alecto renders the name Algeard; Phillimore uses Algeard in Shropshire and the eccentric spelling Alfyard in Berkshire.
