Discussion of the name

Cynesige is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements cynn ‘rank, family, kin’ and sige ‘victory’.

There are fewer than twenty entries for Cynesige in the PASE corpus and so the name should be regarded as unusual. Cynesige 1-13 occur between the tenth and mid-eleventh centuries while Cynsige 15-16 are moneyers; none of them appear in Domesday Book. The PASE corpus suggests that this name was rare in northern England, and although this may not be fully representative it is also notable that the name does not occur in the Durham Liber Vitae.
