Discussion of the name

Cynestan is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements cynn ‘rank, family, kin’ and stān ‘stone, rock, gem’.

There are 12 entries for people called Cynestan recorded from before the Conquest in the PASE corpus, which suggests that the name should be regarded as unusual rare than rare. Cynestan 1-7 occur between the late ninth and early eleventh centuries and Cynestan 9-13 represent eleventh-century moneyers at Dover. The PASE data suggest that the use of this name was limited to southern England and the west midlands, but since the corpus comprises mainly religious and moneyers this may not be representative.
