Discussion of the name

Cynewig is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements cynn ‘rank, family, kin’ and wīg ‘strife, war, valour’.

The entries for this name in the PASE corpus are for Cynewig 1, a catch-all category for occurrences in DB, and Cynewig 2, a London moneyer active 1036-8. Although the PASE corpus omits the Cænwig mæsse preost who witnesses S 1506 of c.958, which von Feilitzen (1937: 221 n3) suggested as representing Cynewig, the only other instance of the name recorded outside DB appears to be among the twelfth-century entries in the Liber vitæ of Hyde (Searle 1897: 159). This paucity of evidence implies that the name was extremely rare in early medieval England.
