Discussion of the name

Doding is an Old English masculine name unrecorded before DB, although it occurs as both a personal name and a surname during the later medieval period. The origin of the name is uncertain. It probably originated as a patronymic meaning ‘son of Dod(d)a or Dud(d)a’, although it could also be an -ing derivative of a word *dod(d) or *dud(d) of uncertain meaning; a further possibility is that it originated as a childish or lall-name (Redin 1919: 16, 62-3, 169-70; von Feilitzen 1937: 223-5; Insley 2003: 384).

All of the DB spellings have ‹o› as the vowel of the main element, hence the use of Doding as the head-form here. However, it is possible that some of these forms could represent the closely-related name Dud(d)ing. Seven pre-Conquest moneyers called Duding are recorded, of whom Duding 1-3 were active in London between 1036 and 1053. A man called Duding also occurs in the tenth-century ‘Hatfield list’ of peasants (Insley 2003: 384).
