Discussion of the name

Topi is an Old Danish masculine name that, together with its side-form Tupi, probably originated as a short form of names such as Thorbiorn (von Feilitzen 1937: 386; Fellows Jensen 1968: 291, 294).

There are two entries for Topi in the PASE corpus, of which Topi 2 is a catch-all for occurrences in DB. Topi 1 was the father of Ulf 28, who witnessed a confirmation of Peterborough Abbey’s lands in 1066x1067 (Bates 1998: no.216), and PASE also draws attention to the Ulf 19 son of Tofi 2 who occurs in a similar confirmation of 1055x1060 (S 1060); these are discussed below under Topi 3.
