Discussion of the name

Winemar is a Continental Germanic masculine name comprising the elements wini ‘friend, protector’ and mâri ‘marvellous, famous’.

There are no pre-Domesday occurrences of this name in the PASE corpus. However, the same name is probably represented by the moneyers Winemær 1 and Winemær 2, who were active at some point in the periods 895-918 and 959-72 respectively. All of the forms cited by PASE for the coins of these moneyers omit the vowel of the second element; and, given the presence of continental moneyers in southern England throughout the late Anglo-Saxon period (Smart 1981: 241, 244-5), it is more likely that these forms represent the CG name Winemar than an otherwise unattested Old English *Winemær. It is also probable that Wenemarius 1, described as advocatus in a spurious early tenth-century charter, should be grouped under the head-form Winemar (S 1205a; Forssner 1916: 258).
