Discussion of the name

Winegot is a Continental Germanic masculine name derived from the elements wini ‘friend, protector’ and gaut, of uncertain meaning but probably related to Old English Geatas and Old Norse Gautr and originally signifying ‘of the Gauti’ or ‘man of Gautland’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 274, 416; cf. Forssner 1916: 16, 186-7; Fellows Jensen 1968: 349).

The only entries in the PASE corpus are for Winegod 1, a Warminster moneyer fl. 1029-36, and Winegot 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB.
