Discussion of the name

Uhtbrand was one of a small number of names coined by splicing OE and Scandinavian elements. Old English uht confusing meant both ‘dawn’ and ‘dusk’ (Feilitzen 1937: 398); brand was the same word as OIcel brandr ‘sword’ (Fellows Jensen 1968: 348). The name shows the creativity of English-speakers in forming new names.

The spelling common to the four instances in the east Midlands, Uctebrand or Vctebrand (the latter with capital U written as V) represents the sound of the name closely. The Cheshire example, Ostebrand, is unexpected, since the commonest personal name with Uht- as its first element, Uhtræd, was never spelled Ost– across some seventy occurrences in Domesday Book, though spellings in Vs- are occasionally found in ExonDB and LDB. On the other hand, it is difficult to see what other name Ostebrand could represent (Feilitzen 1937: 398).

Phillimore and Alecto use Feilitzen’s head-form Uhtbrand, except that in Philllimore Lincolnshire the name appears hypercorrected to Uhtbrandr.
