Discussion of the name

Trawin is a normalized version of the ambiguous DB form Trauuinus, which could represent either of the Continental Germanic masculine names Frawin or Traswin and for both of which the second element was wini ‘friend, protector’. Although von Feilitzen (1937: 388) seemed to favour the latter interpretation it should be noted that the first element þrasa ‘dispute, quarrel’ was rare in Frankish names (Insley 2003: 380; cf. Forssner 1916: 235) whereas Frawin occurs in pre-Conquest England (von Feilitzen 1937: 252-3). The question remains open and so the form Trawin is adopted here.

The only entry in the PASE corpus is for Trawine 1, a catch-all category for occurrences in DB (but a spelling that presumes an Old English rather than CG derivation for Trauuinus).
