Discussion of the name

Toli is a masculine name of specifically East Scandinavian provenance; in the context of its adoption in England that means Danish. By the eleventh century it was clearly used as a name in its own right, though it had originated as a short form of names such as þorlakr, þorleikr, and þorlaugr (von Feilitzen 1937: 386; Fellows Jensen 1968: 289‑90). Outside DB, the only people called Toli hitherto recorded in PASE are a Danish earl who rebelled against Edward the Elder c. 920 (Toli 1) and the sheriff of East Anglia in Edward the Confessor’s reign (Toli 2), who indeed appears in DB and is profiled here.

The name was strikingly common in Lincolnshire in the later twelfth and early thirteenth century (less so in Yorkshire), a fact which helps to explain the multiplicity of persons called Toli in DB.

Note: five instances of Toli in Great Domesday Book (Devon 1, Som. 1, Wilts. 3) and one of Tholi (Dors.) have been assigned to the name Tholf; and instance of Tolus (Devon) in Exon has been assigned to the name Tholf.
