Discussion of the name

Boia probably represents an insular borrowing of the Continental Germanic masculine name Boio, of uncertain meaning (Forssner 1916: 51-2; von Feilitzen 1937: 205).

There are 37 entries for Boia in the PASE corpus, but all of these are moneyers except for Boia 1-4 (people associated with Winchester or Kent) and Boia 5 (a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB) and all but one (Boia 27, a moneyer at Taunton in 1048-50) belong to the period c.880-c.1042.  The large number of moneyers represented suggests that despite the relatively high frequency of entries in PASE, therefore, Boia should perhaps be regarded as an uncommon name with regard to normal usage in the mid-eleventh century.
