Discussion of the name
Steorra is an Old English masculine name derived from steorra ‘star’ and probably originating as a byname (cf. Leofnoth Sterre); the DB form parallels one of those for the probably Anglo-Scandinavian name *Sterri, but the names and individuals are distinct (von Feilitzen 1937: 374; Tengvik 1938: 381; cf. Fellows Jensen 1968: 265).The only entries in the PASE corpus are for Steorra 1, a king’s rædesmann in Kent in 1037x1040, and Sterre 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of this form in DB.
