Discussion of the name

The name Reuer, not recorded anywhere except DB, has baffled all commentators, who have agreed that it was probably Welsh and have drawn attention to the vaguely similar Welsh names Rebur(us) (Redin 1919: 35) and Rewruin (von Feilitzen 1937: 348). To them might be added two earlier names from south-east Wales, Riuoret (occurs c. 758) and Reuelgur or Riuelgur (occurs c. 925–35) (Davies 1979: index).

An alternative and highly speculative suggestion for the origin of the name is made in the profile of Reuer 2.
