Discussion of the name

Erlewin is a Continental Germanic masculine name comprising the elements erl ‘noble, distinguished’ and wini ‘friend, protector’ (Forssner 1916: 79-80).

There are entries for various forms of the name Erlewin in the PASE corpus. Erlewin 1 and Erlewin 2 were eleventh-century moneyers at Bath and Ipswich respectively; Erluinus 1 was a tenth-century count of Montreuil and Ponthieu; Herlewin 1 is a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB; Herlewine 1 was a brother at Bath Abbey in c.1077; and Herluin 1 was supposedly a priest in Worcestershire in the eleventh century (but see Erlewin 7 below). To facilitate the accommodation of these various forms under one head at some future date, the instances of Erlewin profiled below are sequenced from Erlewin 7 onwards.
