Discussion of the name
Fugel is an Old English masculine name derived from the noun fugel ‘fowl, bird’ and probably originating as a byname or nickname; it is not always possible to distinguish the OE form of the name from its Scandinavian cognates (Redin 1919: 6-7; von Feilitzen 1937: 256; cf. Fellows Jensen 1968: 88).There are six entries for this name in the PASE corpus, of whom Fugel 1 is mentioned in a later tenth- or eleventh-century will, Fugel 2 is a catch-all category for occurrences in DB and Fugol 1-4 (recte Fugel 3-6) represent one or more moneyers active c. 925-959; a Fugel was also a member of a guild at Halsford, Devon, in the 1080s (Insley and Probert forthcoming).
