Discussion of the name

Geri is the normalized Old Danish form of a masculine Scandinavian name, Geiri in Old Norse. It probably originated as the short form of one of the names which contained geirr ‘spear’ at the first or second element, but clearly became an independent name. It was rare in Norway, and hence was probably brought to England from Denmark. It was also used in Normandy (von Feilitzen 1937: 259; Fellows Jensen 1968: 98; Adigard des Gautries 1954: 206–7). The DB spelling Gheri represents the Norman way of spelling a word with a hard g before an e (von Feilitzen 1937: 112 § 126). In twelfth- and thirteenth-century Yorkshire and Lincolnshire the name was spelled Geri (Fellows Jensen 1968: 98).

The name is not recorded in PASE other than as a TRE landowner.
