Discussion of the name

Mauua is a name-form of uncertain gender and derivation. The solitary occurrence in DB refers to a ‘free man’ and implies that it is masculine, although the possibility that it is the same as the feminine name Mawa cannot be ruled out; in either case the derivation remains uncertain but is perhaps related to Old English māwan ‘to mow’ or to OE mæw ‘seagull’ (Redin 1919: 21, 100; von Feilitzen 1937: 325). Another possibility, noted by both Redin and von Feilitzen, is that the DB form Mauua is a scribal error for the OE masculine name Manna.

There is no entry for the form Mauua in the PASE corpus, although there are two for Mawa and several for Manna and its variant forms Manne, Monna and Monne.
