Manning is an -ing derivative of the Old English masculine name Mann, from mann ‘person, man’; the DB spelling ‘-ic’ for ‘-ing’ is paralleled in other DB forms and in the coin legends of some of the moneyers noted below (Redin 1919: 149, 168-9; von Feilitzen 1937: 85-6, 324).
