Discussion of the name
Manna, and its variant form Monna, is an Old English masculine name that probably originated as a byname formation from mann ‘man’; formally, it would not be distinguishable from an Anglicized form of the Old Danish name Manni (Redin 1919: 8, 52; von Feilitzen 1937: 324).There are only three entries in the PASE corpus for Manna, of which Manna 1 and Manna 2 occur in the late eighth and early tenth centuries respectively and Manna 3 is a catch-all for occurrences in DB. However, there are also two entries for Manne and two for Monna that should be regarded as forms of Manna and the name also occurs as that of a gebur in the ‘Hatfield list’ (Insley 2003: 384), for which reason the profiles given below begin with Manna 9; it is also very probable that some of the moneyers entered under the head-form Man in PASE in fact represent the name Manna and that some entries under Monne should also be included here.
