Discussion of the name

The DB spelling Luuede perhaps stood for the OE name Leofede, known (though a great rarity) from elsewhere in eleventh-century England. Phillimore and Alecto both rendered it Luvede, which is correct in preserving its pronunciation, but we prefer the exact DB spelling for a name which cannot be resolved for certain. Leofede, if that is indeed the name involved here, starts with OE lēof ‘dear’, one of the commonest first elements in dithematic names (von Feilitzen 1937: 310, 322).
