Discussion of the name

A Continental Germanic masculine name such as Luderic or Liudric evidently lies behind the DB forms Ledric, Lodric, and Ludri. The last two spellings certainly represent the same name (von Feilitzen 1937: 321). Although Ledric ought to stand for a different name (von Feilitzen 1937: 309), it is likely that the Oxfordshire landowner of that spelling was identical with Lodric in Berkshire (Lodric 4), so that the same name must be involved. The letters e and o were readily confusable.

Whatever the underlying name, it is not otherwise recorded in PASE and it is something of a surprise to find even three landowners so called in 1066, each holding around 3–6 hides and relatively concentrated in central England.
