Discussion of the name

Leodwig is a masculine OE name, formed from the elements lēod ‘man’ and wīg ‘battle’. The first element was evidently not much used in late Anglo-Saxon times (though the name Leodmær was common enough and there were several Leodwines); the second element was in widespread use. The name itself is not recorded beyond one instance in DB, but von Feilitzen was wrong to dismiss it as the basis of DB Leduui; he preferred the Continental Germanic name Liudwig (von Feilitzen 1937: 309), but small rural landowners like this Leduui are very unlikely to have borne names of Continental origin.
