Discussion of the name
The name Æscwulf appears from the early eighth century onwards but was never very common and is not at present on record between the 970s and 1066 (PASE: Æscwulf 1–3, 5–9). It was formed from the OE words æsc ‘spear, lance’ or ‘ship’ and wulf ‘wolf’, the latter extremely common as a name-element, the former rather rarer, especially among landowners TRE (von Feilitzen 1937: 182).Bibliography
