Discussion of the name

Alwaru is an Old English feminine name, with the first element Al- representing either ælf ‘elf, sprite’ or æðel ‘noble, famous’ and the second element being waru ‘shelter, protection, care’.

The only relevant entries in the PASE corpus are Alware 1, a catch-all category for occurrences in DB, and seven entries for Ælfwaru (from the tenth century onwards); there are no entries for the name *Æthelwaru, but this does occur in the bounds of a tenth-century Wiltshire charter (S 789).
