Discussion of the name
Bersi was a name of Scandinavian origin, from the word bersi, meaning a ‘he-bear’. No other examples are currently recorded in PASE, but the name was widely enough used in Yorkshire to be evidenced in several major and minor place-names (von Feilitzen 1937: 201; Fellows Jensen 1968: 53). Phillimore and Alecto both use the normalized ON and ODan spelling Bersi.Bibliography
