Discussion of the name
Ceolræd is an OE masculine name formed from the elements cēol ‘keel, ship’ and ræd ‘counsel, wisdom’. It currently occurs in PASE eight times before DB, earliest as the king who ruled Mercia 709–16, but concentrated in the ninth century and latest as a thegn alive in 988, with another four instances in the original core of the Durham Liber Vitae (PASE: Ceolred 1–7; DLV: II, 98). The presence of one TRE landowner called Ceolræd in Warwickshire shows the continuing currency of the name in Mercia.Bibliography
